    • FAQ
  • What is the Catholic Indian Mission (CIM)?

The CIM (consisting specifically of Ft. Yates, Cannonball, and Porcupine) exists to provide for the spiritual needs of the people of Sioux County, especially the Native American community.  We accomplish this through two primary means:

    1. We provide for the sacramental needs of those in the vicinity of the Mission.  We also work to evangelize those who do not know Jesus Christ or re-introduce Him to those who may have wandered from the path of life.

    2. The Catholic Indian Mission operates St. Bernard's Mission School.  This is the heart of the CIM.  Our school is a powerful force for good in the lives' of the students, their families, and the Standing Rock community.  Through the Mission School, we can change the course of our students' lives.
  • What does it mean that the CIM is a "mission"?

The CIM is a mission in that it relies almost entirely on the generosity of donors from across the United States for its continued operation. The work of the CIM, especially the school, would come to an immediate end were it not for the gnerosity of people of good will from across the United States.  Many are faithful Catholics, fulfilling their responsibility as good stewards to share what they have received.  Many others, though, are not Catholic, but recognize the necessity and goodness of the work that the CIM is doing  at Standing Rock and support it.

  • Where is the Catholic Indian Mission located?

The parishes of the CIM are found across Sioux County, North Dakota. The central parish, St. Peter's, and the St. Bernard's Mission School are found in Ft. Yates, ND, about 57 miles south of Mandan, ND, on historic Highway 1806.
